20 Chinese Muslims to be expelled from Cambodia

Phnom Penn, Dec 19: 20 Chinese Muslim Uighurs who move in to Cambodia as refugees after the Jul 2009 unrest in northwest China's Xinjiang region will be expelled, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Saturday, Dec 19.

"They are illegal immigrants and according to Cambodian immigration law they should be expelled from the country. So we must expel them," foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong.

According to official report, the group came at UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office after clashes between Xinjiang's Uighurs and China's majority Han ethnic group in which 200 people dead and more than 1,600 injured.

Official came to know about when they appealed for UN refugee status in Cambodia two weeks, fearing torture in China if they were sent back to China.

Cambodia had been strongly advised against sending them by rights groups and the US government, stating that the group may face persecution.
