AP: Anti-Telangana protests continue for 10th day

Hyderabad, Dec 19: Supporters of united Andhra Pradesh continued agitations for the tenth day after the Centre announced its approval to creation of a separate Telangana on Wednesday, Dec 9.

Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions saw hunger strikes, road blockades and demonstrations despite the two-day bandh in Krishna district, West and East Godavari districts, Guntur, Anantapur and other districts in both the regions.

The bandh remained peaceful until protests broke out in Vijayawada city of Krishna district after Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, who is on a indefinite fast protesting separation of the state, was forcibly shifted to a hospital on Saturday, Dec 19 morning, the police informed.

Led by two former ministers M Budhaprasad and D Rajasekhar (Nehru), Joint Action Committee (JAC) shouted anti-Telangana slogans and resorted to road blockades in different parts of the city and on NH-5 disrupting traffic.

The police have taken the required steps to divert the traffic from the blocked roads.

Even though there was no untoward incident reported from Anantapur, the situation remained tense. Students in Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU), Anantapur and Andhra University (AU), Vishakapatnam continued indefinite fasts in support of 'samaikya' or united AP.

Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi, who recently resigned from the assembly in support of the united state, visited the hunger strike camps in Gajuwaka and expressed solidarity with the protestors.

There is tight security arrangements throughout the state.

The educational institutions, banks, ATMs, business establishments remained closed in the areas where bandh has been imposed.
