Washington, Dec 16: In a move to close the Guantanamo Bay prison on time, president Barack Obama has announced the shifting of some of the detainees to Illinois prison on Tuesday, Dec 15.
The letter adressed to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn said that US administration was planning to buy Thomson Correctional Center in northwestern Illinois to accomodate detainees from Gunatanamo and other federal prisoners.
The Correctional center will have heavy security and US military trial commission trials will be held inside the secured walls.
"Not only will this help address the urgent overcrowding problem at our nation's federal prisons, but it will also help achieve our goal of closing the detention center at Guantanamo in a timely, secure, and lawful manner," said the letter, signed by secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, among others.
Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin informed that the number of detainees from Guantanamo Bay will be not more than 100.
Republicans are critical about the decision to shift the detainees with Republican Senator Lamar Alexander questioning the shifting of 'terrorist' into the country.
House Republican leader John Boehner said that the decision showed that the adminstration have forgotten about those who lost their lives in the Sep 11, 2001.
In response White House spokesman Robert Gibbs called it the most craziest comment by an opponent so far.
