Delhi: More than 2 vehicles may attract extra tax

Delhi: Extra tax for extra vehicles soon
New Delhi, Dec 16: In a bid to ease the traffic situation in the capital, the Delhi government is mulling over possibility of levying tax from people who own more than two vehicles.

Informing the Delhi High court on the worsening traffic situation in Delhi, Traffic Police counsel Vikas Pahwa told the bench that suggestions in this regard have been sent to the government for consideration.

"To ease out the traffic on the roads first and foremost step is to put an hold on the registration of the vehicles. And for those people who have more than two vehicles registered on their names, we are planning to slap more taxes on them in the form of road taxes, parking charges, area pricing and other such taxes," Pahwa pointed out.

The special three judge bench comprising of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, Justice S Muralidhar and Justice S Ravinder Bhatt, which has reportedly appreciated the initiative, has asked the government to consider the suggestions seriously.

This discussion came up during the court's hearing of a petition filed by NGO Manushi on the court's order and the MCD's policy of banning rickshaws from the main arterial roads and Chandni Chowk area in Old Delhi.

The petition claimed that the order violated the fundamental rights of rickshaw pullers.
