SC asks Center to legalize prostitution
New Delhi, Dec 10: Supreme Court on Wednesday, Dec 9 advised the Center to legalize prostitution if it cannot curb it the with legal measures.

"When you say it is the world's oldest profession and when you are not able to curb it by laws, why don't you legalize it? You can then monitor the trade, rehabilitate and provide of medical aid to those involved in the trade," said the court.

The bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A K Patnaik told Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam that legalization of prostitution would be a better way of controlling trafficking of women as punitive measures adopted everywhere in the world has failed to put a lid on it.

The court's advised came in response to the PIL and intervention application filed by non-governmental organisation Bachpan Bachao Andolan.

Responding to Rao, Subramaniam said that the government was working towards declaring circus hazardous industry to prevent child abuse.
