Students choose former President Kalam as country's environment ambassador

New Delhi, Dec 9 (ANI): Students from across the country have voted former President APJ Abdul Kalam as country's environment ambassador.

The campaign was conducted by an NGO across the country.

Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh felicitated Kalam in a programme here.

Speaking on the occasion Ramesh said: "We are using icons like Dr. Kalam in order to bring more and more people into a mass movement for a cleaner and a more sustainable future. I think we can do it, I think the younger generation has the enthusiasm and the exuberance and with Dr. Kalam you will have a leader you will have a leader who will take you forward."

Interacting with media on sidelines of the programme Kalam said: We will have to persuade the developed world, they are (doing the maximum emission), they and some other countries also. In 10 years time fossil fuel application should get reduced to 50 percent. That is what India has to work for."

In Copenhagen, representatives from 192 countries have gathered for the biggest climate talks in history.

The U.N. says any Copenhagen deal must contain ambitious emissions cuts by rich nations, financing pledges for poorer nations and steps by major developing countries to curb their greenhouse gas pollution.

But negotiators are struggling to reach agreement on the depth of emissions cuts needed to slow the pace of climate change and are worried about the cost to economies. (ANI)
