Languages must not hinder brotherhood: Karunanidhi

'Tamil not opposed to any language'
Chennai, Dec 9: Speaking at the State Government Film Awards function for 2007 and 2008, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi advised against linguistic chauvinism as it impedes harmony and brotherhood.

The DMK supremo said, “Linguistic differences should not come in the way of harmony and brotherhood."

One language can not dominate over the other, he said, adding that language was merely a tool for mutual understanding and communication.

"Tamil is not opposed to any language and so should no language be opposed to Tamil," the Chief Minister said.

Mr Karunanidhi is known for his proficiency in the Tamil and has passion for arts.

The Chief Minister, who dubs functions involving film fraternity as 'medicine' to his ill-health, received Best Dialogue Writer award for 'Uliyin Osai' from Tamil movie stars including Rajnikant and Kamal Hassan.

Interestingly, the educational institutions in the state do not teach Hindi. And DMK administration over the years has not been able to change the state's anti-Hindi stance which took birth in the pre-independence era.
