China: School stampede kills 8,  injures 26
Beijing, Dec 8: 8 students were killed and 26 others injured in a school stampede in central China on Monday, Dec 7.

The incident took place when some students lost their footings while descending down the staircase after the evening study sessions at 9:10 p.m.

The state media reported that 400 student were using the enclosed stairwell just 4 feet (1.2 meters) width to come out of their classrooms.

Following the incident, the government removed the head of the education bureau on 'leadership responsibility' and has frozen the bank account of the leadership bureau.

The school principal and chairman of its board of governors have placed under mild detention.

Among the 8 killed, 7 were boys and 1 girl. Those with serious injuries have been taken for treatment.
