ULFA chief to be produced in Assam court

ULFA chief to produced in Assam court
Guwahati, Dec 5: Arrested chairman of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) Arabinda Rajkhowa will be produced in Assam Court along with deputy commander-in-chief of the outfit Raju Baruah on Saturday, Dec 5.

"We would seek 14 days" police remand of the three arrested ULFA members before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court," a senior Assam police officer said.

Rajkhowa and Baruah surrendered with their family before the Indian authorities at Dawki Meghalaya on Dec 4. They were brought back to Guwahati in a helicopter.

Police said that no charges will be framed against the family of surrendered ULFA members.

"Family members of Arabinda Rajkhowa and Raju Baruah (deputy commander-in-chief) have approached us for legal help and we are providing them legal assistance," said Bijon Mahajan, a senior lawyer in Guwahati.

While Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi is considering Rajkhowa's surrender as step towards lasting peace in Assam, it has been anticipated that ULFA commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah could retaliate by unleashing violence in the state.
