Fire in Russian nightclub kills 101
Moscow, Dec 5: A normal night out ended in horror for hundreds when a fire ripped through at a nightclub in Russia's Perm city in the wee hours of Saturday, Dec 5, killing at least 101 people.

According to new reports, the fire lead by an explosion was caused by pyrotechnics. Most of the people died due to burns or gas inhalation.

TV news reports show the charred bodies of the victims, majority of whom were youngsters, lying in rows outside the club.

ITAR-Tass news agency quotes Regional security minister Igor Orlov as saying that the club had a suspended plastic ceiling that caught fire when 'cold fireworks' were ignited.

These fireworks are generally are fountain-type displays with lower temperatures than conventional fireworks.

The authorities have ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Japan shuts units at top nuke plant after quake

Tokyo, July 16: Tokyo Electric Power Co has shut down three major generators at the world's biggest nuclear power plant after today's powerful earthquake in Japan caused a brief fire in one of the units, company officials said. The company, Asia's biggest utility, said there there was no radiation leakage at the facility after a fire hit a transformer at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa No 3 nuclear generation unit.
