Mumbai: Protests over 15 pc water cut, 1 killed

Mumbai, Dec 3: According to latest reports, one person has been killed and several others were injured, when police baton-charged demonstrators protesting against water cuts on Thursday, Dec 3.

According to officials, protestors of an NGO 'Swabhiman' started protesting against the introduction of 15 per cent water cut, in front of Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Officials said, an unspecified number of agitators received injuries when the riot police used force to disperse them from the BMC headquarters in south Mumbai this afternoon.

Waving red flags and shouting slogans against BMC, the agitators pulled down barricades put up by the police and tried to barge into the Corporation headquarters, prompting the security personnel to lathicharge.

Sources said, the area has been cleared of the agitators.

'Resident had complained over illegal repairs'

Mumbai, July 19: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Shubha Raul today said a resident of the collapsed building, V R Jain, had complained to local civic authorities that the owner of Vardhman Jewellers, situated on the ground floor of Laxmi Chhaya, had removed a pillar, making the structure prone to crumble. It is the worst, inefficient, corrupt, poor performance dept. I think it is high time the government privatize all services. Or there should be a commission like the CERC, to look into the performance of Municipal Corporation All over India and to set standards for minimum services expected from such organization.
