PM's daughter  awarded by  Infosys
Bangalore, Dec 1: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's second daughter Upinder Singh has been chosen for Infosys Prize for social sciences.

Upinder Singh who is a history professor at Delhi University will share the award with Abijit Vinayak Banerjee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)  for his contribution to economic theory of development and his work in the empirical evaluation of public policy.

The jury has attributed Upinder's outstanding contributions as a historian of ancient and early medieval India, coupled with her ability to articulate her scholarly research to a live audience as the criteria for winning the award.

"Upinder has been a pioneer in supplementing literary sources with an impressive array of archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic evidence in brilliantly reconstructing early Indian history. The vast chronological span of her scholarship stretches across millennia from the Paleolithic and Mesolithic ages to 1200 CE," the jury said.

The Rs.5-million (Rs.50 lakh) prize along with a citation and medallion will be presented by prime minister Manmohan Singh on Jan 4, 2010 in New Delhi.
