CAT fiasco enters 4th day, Sibal orders probe
New Delhi, Dec 1: With more exam centres across the country cancelling the Common Entrance Test (CAT), the online exam fiasco entered the fourth day.

According to media reports, technical problems were reported from two labs at the Sahara Academy and School of Management in Lucknow, two labs in Bhopal and two labs in Bangalore on Tuesday, Dec 1.

Taking the issue into serious consideration, the Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal slammed premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and ordered an enquiry to ascertain what caused the first ever online CAT to fail.

"This should not have happened. As government we are very concerned," Sibal said.

"I had asked the IIMs to give me a report and as per Dec 1 morning, 45,000 students had enrolled for giving the test but 8,000 could not. This is a huge percentage," he added.

CAT exam which is held annually for entry into the premier business schools went online only in 2009. Over the four days thousands of IIM aspirants could not take the test as the server crashed.

Prometric, the firm responsible for conducting the exams said that the computers were malfunctioning due to virus attacks.

I had my CAT exam on 1st December in rodrigues engg college at 3:30 pm.I had come all the way from a place 400km from Mumbai and took a couple of days off from my job to take the exam.I reached my centre well in advance,at around 1 pm.It was a big day for me,afterall. We were seated on our systems at 2:30 pm.After waiting for 45 min. we were told that our exam might get delayed by 15 min due to some minor problem,15 more min,15 more min,15 more min,15 more min,15 more min,15 more min. Finally, the news came at 5:15 that our exam stands cancelled. Now,who's going to compensate for the 2 days I lost, money I lost in travelling to mumbai, and more so for harassment on the exam day.Excuse me,were they supposed to teach us management? This is the biggest example of mismanagement I've ever come across.Hope I dont have to go through such a harrowing experience on the rescheduled date.

I also appeared for the same exam on 30th November,2009. My center was IMT Faridabad, a renowned college which being at an interior location, was itself a tough task to find. Additionally the facilities provided and the uninformed staff took everyone of us on nerves. As we were asked to report the test-center by 1:00 pm for the second shift (which was suppose to start at 3:30pm sharp), i reached there at 12:30pm after traveling for 3 hrs, we waited there for around 5 hours till the morning batch completed their exam at 5pm (who were called at 8am in the morning) after them we were asked to enter the testing area, wherein after a security check of 30 min, we sat at our designated systems. We sat there for about 1 hour until we were asked to leave the systems,go back and reschedule our exam (due to server failure). NOW, Being a CAT aspirant i know what respect do people have for this exam and for the IIMs too but after facing so many problems, i don't think that we will be able to maintain it. It was not Testing-of-Intellect rather i would call it as Patience-Checking and a frustrating experience for those who are giving it for the first time and also for those who are giving it as a One-Shot last try. Although they have charged more money from us this time but no such facilities were seen that made it worth Rs 1400. So please, it is a request that asl them not to repeat this trial in future otherwise most of us, out of confusion, will stop dreaming of such big named exams. Keep it as simple as earlier (a paper-pencil based exam).
