India puts conditions to sign on to emission cuts

Port of Spain, Nov 28: A day after China vowed to cut down its Carbon Emissions, India expressed its willingness to co-operate with an 'ambitious' global target for emission reduction or limiting temperature increase provided that it is accompanied by an equitable burden-sharing paradigm.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who slammed attempts by some developed nations to rubbish the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions revealed India's stance on the climate change on Saturday, Nov 28 pushing for a legally binding outcome at the Copenhagen climate change meet.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM), Prime Minister said that the climate change "is becoming the pretext for pursuing protectionist policies under a green label" which would be rejected by India and other developing nations.

In Oct 2009, Manmohan Singh had asked the developed countries to bring down the emission to tolerable levels and stressed that the developing countries cannot sign treaties to cut emissions and compromise on development.
