Radio Pakistan keen on wooing Sikhs

Abohar, Nov.25 (ANI): The Punjabi Durbar programme of Radio Pakistan continues to harp on the state of Sikhs in India. In the latest programme it has chosen the non-resident Indians to support its allegation that Sikhs are unhappy in India.

It has quoted Manmohan Singh Khalsa, Chairman of World Sikh Federation, to support its allegation that the Indian government killed over 25,000 Sikh youth in fake encounters.

The allegations are baseless, says Punjab's historian Gagandeep Randhawa. Mere fact that Non-Resident Indians are taking so much interest in India, indicates that things are normal.

"NRIs brought money to the country. They don't have hunger for money but for love. They help poor people in India and Pakistan; and take proper care of the Gurudwara Sahib, offer Ardas (thanksgiving prayer) everyday in the gurdwara that the great God has given them the opportunity to offer their services to Gurudwara Nankana Sahib. They have same faith in God whether they show it by organizing mass marriages for the poor, building houses for them, worshipping in the Gurudwaras, or providing food to the poor, "said Gagandeep Randhawa.

"As one child makes complaints about another child to his mother to hide his own mischief, Pakistan is doing the same to hide its mistakes. It is trying to divert people's mind from activities like trafficking of drugs and other alcoholic products," said Randhawa.

Moreover, the latest allegations look ridiculous considering the fact that Sardar Parkash Singh Badal is heading the State Government of Punjab, which is an Akali Dal and BJP combine.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who is also a Sikh, has always believed in the concept of secular India where members of all religions can live in harmony.

Broadcasters of the Radio Pakistan need to know that the Indian Constitution guarantees that all Indian citizens are treated equally and have the right to propagate and practice their religion.

The administration promotes secularism and equality in all respects; any deviation can be challenged in courts.

People in the border areas feel that Radio Pakistan should try to focus on the condition of minorities in Pakistan, who are facing problems caused by a political system plagued by corruption and fundamentalism.

Recently they had heard that Sikhs had to migrate from the north western border of Pakistan. Can one expect Pakistan Radio to disseminate the truth? If Pakistan wants to woo the Sikhs in India, it should first take care of Sikhs in Pakistan. (ANI)

Clinton dominates US campaign news, study finds

Washington, Oct 29: Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has dominated news coverage of the 2008 White House race, partly due to negative segments about her on conservative talk radio, according to a new study released to day. Clinton was the main subject of 17 per cent of stories during the first five months of this year, almost twice as much coverage as the leading Republican candidate, Rudy Giuliani, who had 9 per cent, the study found.
