26/11: Wife pays tribute to Ashok Kamte with truth

Ashok Kamte's Widow, Vinita writes book
Mumbai, Nov 25: Vinita Kamte, the widow of the police officer slain during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks of Nov 2008 released a book on her husband Ashok Kamte on Tuesday, Nov 24.

Co-authored by former journalist Vinita Deshmukh, the book titled 'To The Last Bullet' narrates the story of the Additional Police Commissioner"s early days and his journey till the ghastly night of terror attacks.

Utilising the the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the writers have also investigated into what actually transpired during the last few hours of his life.

"The information about the death of my husband and two other police officers, Hemant Karkare and Vijay Salaskar, was known immediately but the circumstances which led to their death were not known for many months," said Vinita Kamate during the release at the Taj Mahal Hotel.

Kamte's wife Vinita who had to deal with many unanswered questions about the circumstances in which her husband was killed, said that it was finally the RTI that gave her the answers on the events and incidents that led to her husband"s death.

Chief guest and RTI activist Aruna Roy who released the book said, “It"s shocking that even her status of an IPS officer"s wife did not allow her to get a copy of the post-mortem report of her husband...She has moved much beyond her role as a wife and without anger tried to probe with RTI as a weapon on what is wrong with the system."
