Exemplary punishment to those found guilty by Liberhan: CPI-M

New Delhi, Nov 24 (ANI): CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury has asked the Congress-led UPA Government to pursue cases against those found responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid in December 1992 by the Liberhan Commission.

"Though justice has been delayed for 17 long years, in this case, justice must be done. If the law has been broken, legal action has to be taken. Concrete action must be taken against the perpetrators on the basis of the evidence gathered in the report," Yechury said on Tuesday.

He said demolition of Babri Masjid was the most serious assault on our secular democratic polity of the country and exemplary punishment should be given to those found guilty.

Replying to questions on former premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee's alleged involvement, Yechury said the full report needed to be studied to confirm whether it contains any such reference.

"However, Vajpayee himself has gone on record to say that he was asked to remain in Lucknow and not proceed to Ayodhya, which he did. Who asked him and why?"

Yechury also said the P V Narasimha Rao government did not take any action despite being empowered by the National Integration Council in November 1992, days before the December 6 demolition. (ANI)
