Ajit Singh threatens road blockade on sugarcane price issue

New Delhi, Nov 24 (ANI): Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh has threatened to launch road blockade in Uttar Pradesh if the state government fails to resolve the issue with sugarcane growers in the next two days.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, Singh said: "We are giving two days time to the mill owners and the state government to talk to farmers and start the mills else we will start 'chakka jam' (road blockade) from November 26."

Lok Sabha was adjourned on the first day of the winter session on Thursday, following uproar by opposition leaders demanding hike in sugarcane prices.

Sugarcane farmers of Uttar Pradesh, who are caught between the central government's Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) and the state government's State Advised Price (SAP) mechanism, have been asking the government to fix the prices of sugarcane at rupees 280 per quintal.

The central government has announced a price of rupees 129.85 per quintal for sugarcane during the 2009-10 crushing season under FRP system. (ANI)
