Tata extends pay per second tariff to roaming

After Airtel, Tata eases roaming rates
Mumbai, Nov 23: Just days after Airtel introduced its Turbo plan which cuts roaming rates by 60 per cent, Tata Teleservices heated up the telecom price war by extending its pay per second billing tariff to roaming calls.

On Sunday, Nov 22, India's No 6 mobile services provider announced that from Monday, Nov 23 its subscribers will just have to pay 1 paisa per second for both incoming and outgoing calls made while roaming across India, irrespective of the network used.

Tata Teleservices, 26 per cent of which are owned by Japan's NTT DoCoMo, was the first to launch per-second billing in a market where all service providers followed the pay per-minute scheme.

On Friday, Nov 20, Bharti Airtel introduced its roaming plan after conforming to the pay-per second scheme.

The players in the mobile industry are engaged in an intense price war to bag as many subscribers as they can. However, this trend has raised questions on the firms' profitability.
