Sonia Gandhi assures support to wives of Hemant Karkare, Vijay Salaskar

New Delhi, Nov 23(ANI): The wives of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack martyrs, Hemant Karkare and Vijay Salaskar, called on Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi here on Monday.

The meeting came just three days before the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror in Mumbai, where 10 heavily armed gunmen went on a rampage and attacked major landmarks in the city. Karkare and Salaskar died while fighting terrorists near Cama Hospital.

Kavita Karkare and Smita Salaskar shared their grief and demanded to award capital punishment to Ajmal Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist who was caught during the attacks.

Although Kavita Karkare did not elaborate about their conversation with Sonia Gandhi, she said that her meeting with the leading political leader was purposeful.

"I do not have many complaints. State Government has given its due. Now, we have come to interact with the Centre. I have discussed with her (Sonia Gandhi) and she assured to consider our needs at the earliest," Kavita Karkare said.

"She is a woman herself, she can empathize. She understands what I am going through She has undergone the similar tragedy herself, I believe that she will understand," she added.

Earlier in the month, Kavita had raised questions on the disappearance of the bullet-proof jacket worn by her husband Heamant Karkare on the night of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

She had even filed an application under Right to Information Act (RTI) but was told the jacket is missing.

"When his body was found, the bullet-proof jacket was missing. I filed an RTI application a few months ago asking where is the jacket but the reply I got was that it is missing," Kavita had said. (ANI)
