'Policy is pro-mill owners & anti-farmers'

New Delhi, Nov 20: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar is facing the music for the sugarcane policy. After protests from angry farmers, he has become the object of joint attack by RJD, BJP and SP for the policy which spells benefit for the sugar-mill owners and doom for the farmers.

"With the blessings of Pawar, the raw sugar of Brazil is lying in the godowns of the rich sugar mill owners. So that sugar mills continue to run with that raw sugar, even as farmers burn their sugarcane crop or even themselves," SP general secretary Amar Singh said, adding that the policy is pro-mill owners and anti-farmers.

In line with Amar Singh's criticism senior BJP leader from Maharashtra Gopinath Munde said that the the Sugarcane Control (Amendment) Order 2009 was introduced because of Pawar's vested interest of helping the sugar-mill owners instead of helping the farmers as an agriculture minister.

Stating that Pawar cannot be separated from the government, RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said that neither the government nor Pawar can be blamed individually for it, but the criticism should be borne by the one who is in the government.
