Rani Lakshmibai's letter found in British library

Rani Lakshmibai's letter unearthed
London, Nov 17: A letter written by the prominent Indian woman freedom fighter, Rani Lakshmibai has been reportedly found in the archives of the British Library.

According to a BBC report published on Monday, Nov 16, academics unearthed a letter written by the Rani of Jhansi written shortly before the 1857 Indian mutiny.

Written in Persian, the letter was addressed to the then governor-general of the East India Company Lord Dalhousie.

The Indian Queen who is often compared with the 'Joan of Arc' describes the fateful events on the night her husband died in the letter.

The academics believe that the discovery of the letter is a significant one as there is so little historical evidence from the Rani of Jhansi's lifetime.

"This a letter written by an iconic talisman for the nationalist narrative in India. The letter is part of a collection of documents known as the Bowring Collection," Deepika Ahlawat, research curator for the Victoria and Albert Museum's Maharaja exhibition currently being staged in London told BBC.

The collection is named after Lewin Bentham Bowring, a civil servant working in India who gathered a remarkable collection of documents, photographs and ephemera relating to the maharajas, Ahlawat informed.
