Ghana gold mine disaster kills 18
Accra, Nov 12: At least 18 people were killed when an illegal mine caved in Ghana, a police official said on Thursday, Nov 12.

According to Western Region police commander Kojo Antwi Tabi, about 30 miners were working in the privately-owned gold mine in Dompoase town in the country's west before it caved in and more bodies were likely to be recovered

"This is the biggest mining tragedy that has ever hit Ghana," Tabi said. The victims included 14 women.

"The government must take measures to control the activities of miners," he added.

Ghana is the world's second largest producer of gold, and it accounts for most of the nation's foreign exchange earnings.
