UN declares July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day
New York, Nov 11: As a tribute towards Nelson Mandela's contribution to world peace, UN General Assembly has declared July 18, which is the birthday of Nelson Mandela, as 'Nelson Mandela International Day'.

Stating that the day will be commemorated every starting 2010, General Assembly president Ali Treki said that the resolution was taken as a mark of appreciation for the great man who had suffered for the sake of people everywhere.

Nobel laureate Nelson Mandela brought multi-racial democracy in South Africa with his anti-apartheid movement,which eventually resulted in his imprisonment for 27 years .

Few years after his release in 1990, Mandela went on to win the country's first democratic Presidential election.

Jacob Zuma, new South African President

Durban, May 7: South African parliament on Wednesday, May 7 elected Jacob Zuma as the President of the country with a thumping majority. The parliament which convened for the first time after he led ANC to a landslide win.67-year-old Zuma bagged 277 votes as against his opponet Mvume Dandala, who got 47 votes.
