Visually-impaired participants run marathon to promote sports culture in Delhi

New Delhi, Nov. 8 (ANI): In a bid to promote sports culture in Delhi, a marathon was organised here on Sunday.

Thousands braved the early morning chill to take part in the marathon that saw 850 visually challenged participants.

Organised by the Salwan Group of Schools, the marathon saw participants sprint through a three kilometre long stretch across the Army Equestrian centre in New Delhi.

Participants also included school kids and teenagers.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit appreciated the enthusiasm of the people behind the marathon while inaugurating the event.

"The Salwan family has organized the marathon of 40, 000 kids. I congratulate them and I congratulate the children and also bless them. Events such as these, which include the participation of children and also girls, help build enthusiasm for sports. At the time we need lot of zeal and promptness for, Commonwealth Games, are round the corner," she said.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be India's first major international sports event after the 1982 Asian Games.

The Games will be staged in India for the first time and in Asia for the second time. (ANI)

Cuba stop Japan to enter baseball final

Sydney: Cuba, led by Jose Ariel Contreras and Orestes Kindelan, advanced to the Olympic baseball final on Tuesday by defeating Japan 3-0 in the semi-finals at Olympic Park Stadium.Double Olympic champions Cuba will play the winner of Tuesday night's semi-final between the United States and South Korea for the gold on Wednesday.Contreras shut out the Japanese on six hits. The hard-throwing righthander struck out nine without walking a single batter.The offence was supplied by power-hitting first baseman.....
