Voting for 1 LS, 31 assembly seats begins
New Delhi, Nov 7: Amid high security voting for the Assembly by polls to 31 constituencies in seven states across India began on Saturday, Nov 7.

While the assembly by-polls is being held for 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 10 in West Bengal, three in Kerala, two each in Rajasthan, Assam and Himachal Pradesh and one seat in Chhattisgarh, one Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh is also up for elections.

Firozabad parliamentary constituency went into polls following the resignation of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's son Akhilesh. Now, the party has fielded Akhilesh's wife Dimple as its candidate in the constituency.

In West Bengal, these polls are being considered as an indicator as to how the Left Front would fair in 2011 assembly polls.While the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Jyoti Basu has made an attempt to tap into the Congress vote bank in Bengal, the southern state of Kerala too sees a similar fight between the Left and the Congress in Kannur assembly seat.

The Election Commission of India as scheduled the counting of votes for Nov 10.

Bird flu spreads to new areas in Assam

Kamrup (Assam), Dec 6: With a fresh outbreak of bird flu in poultry being detected in Assam, authorities are prepared to start the culling of thousands of chickens.Reports say the virus has spread to the districts of Barpeta and Nalbari from Hajo in Kamrup District, where it was first reported. Samples were sent to laboratories in Bhopal and have tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza.The State Government has ordered culling operations and culling officers have already started going.....
