India new player in global influence

Washington, Nov 7: Director of National Intelligence Dennis C Blair said on Friday, Nov 6, that India has won a seat at the table of global influence.

In his address at the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he said,"We have some new players - Brazil and India - that now have a seat at the table of global influence,"adding that there are new stakes and new rules for everyone.

Blair, who heads 16 top US intelligence agencies, said that just as Brazil and India are emerging as new players, the role of Russia and China too is likely to change.

Talking about the findings of National Intelligence Council (NIC), Blair said that the international system has changed considerably from the system after the World War II.

"Many emerging market countries such as China, India and Brazil have weathered the global financial recession better than the industrialised democracies - they've actually experienced faster recoveries", Blair said.

However, he said that issues like energy security, resource scarcities, climate change, proliferation and terrorism still needs to be tackled.
