PM expresses regret over death of kidney patient

New Delhi, Nov 4: Expressing regret over the loss of live due to the security arrangements made for him, Manmohan Singh wrote a letter addressed to the wife of a 32-year old kidney patient who died during his visit to Chandigarh's Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

"I am writing to you to express my profound sense of sadness at the death of your husband Shri Sumit Verma yesterday," Dr Singh said in his letter on Wednesday, Nov 4.

Learning from the Tuesday, Nov 3 incident, the Prime Minister said that he has directed the authorities to be 'more sensitive' to the concerns of the common man when they make security arrangements for VVIPs.

"I have issued instructions so that in future authorities are more sensitive to the concerns of the common man while imposing such restrictions for reasons of security," he said.

The family of the 32-year-old Ambala man claimed that when they were rushing him to the hospital in a bid to save his life, they were sent from one gate to another for two hours by the security personnel despite being told that the patient was in a critical condition.
