'US universities interested in coming to India'

Washington, Oct 31: Winding up his week-long visit to United States where he tried to woo the American universities to come to India and explore possible tie-ups, the HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal announced some good news for the country.

Speaking to Indian reporters here on Friday, Oct 30, Mr Sibal has revealed that the American universities are only 'extremely' interested in coming to India but are also hopeful that India would bring in a relevant law to make this possible.

"They are not only extremely interested, but they are also proactive in expressing their hope that the law (in India) would be put in place very soon so that actually they can come forward and come to India as foreign education providers," Sibal said.

While he was in US Mr Sibal met high-level officials and representatives of many universities and other educational institutions.

Apart from holding talks with the representatives from prestigious universities such as Harvard University, Boston University, Yale University and MIT, Sibal met US Secretary for Education, Arny Duncan who together agreed on establishing a US-India Education Council.

The council would include top American academicians, university officials and representatives from other educational institutions to promote public-private partnership in India's higher education sector.

Also, during his 'exceptionally satisfying' trip, Sibal meting eminent Indian-American academicians and a delegation of PANIIT.

Informing the American officials and authorities  about the reforms in the Indian education sector, the minister assured that the Foreign Education Providers' Bill which will provide 'flexibility' for partnerships or tie-ups will be introduced as soon as the cabinet clears it.
