Indian-American expelled over nose ring returns

US: Indian expelled for wearing nose ring
Washington, Oct 28: An Indian-American girl who was expelled for wearing a traditional nose ring in class has reportedly allowed to return to class after she reportedly replaced the ring with a transparent stud.

Bountiful Junior High School in Utah agreed to let her return to class after the incident of the student's expulsion invited anger from the Indian American group. The community argued that the school was infringing up on the girl's right to express her religious and cultural identity.

The incident took place in mid-Oct 2009, when Suzannah Pabla, born to American mother and an Indian Sikh father was sent home for wearing a nose ring.

Despite the school's contention that the piece of jewelry was in violation of the school's dress code, the girl's mother, Shirley alleged racial discrimination.

Even though her parents are divorced, Suzzannah sometimes worships in her father's Sikh faith, and the Indian-American community asserted that the girl only wanted to respect her roots by wearing the nose ring.

"I wanted to be like more of half my culture," a media reported quoted Suzannah as saying.
