Mumbai, Oct 27: To combat the increasing pirate attacks in the Indian Ocean, two navy warships will be deployed by the Indian Navy near Seychelles and Mauritius.

The move came after the hijacking of MV Al Haliq in which 24 Indians were held captive on Wednesday Oct 21.

Evading question on the operation, Captain Manohar Nambiar, Chief PRO, Defence (Western Region) told a private television that the ships are into surveillance activities in addition to the ship which is already patrolling the Gulf of Aden.

Among the two warships deployed, INS Tabar has earlier been used to counter Somali pirates while TNS Shardul is known for its ability to accommodate 500 troops.

A ICGS vessel which has the speed of 4000 nautical miles will be deployed with the two warships.
