indonesia: stoning law to be reviewed
Banda Aceh, Oct 27: The Islamic law to fatally stone adulterers and whipping of homosexuals has been put up for reviewing by the new legislative body in Indonesia's Aceh Province.

The implementation of the law has been in speculation since it was enacted on September 14 by the former Aceh legislative assemly.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah had earlier said on Oct 13, that the implementation of the law is unlikely adding that the Governor too has refuse to support the legislation.

Reiterating Faizasyah statement, Aceh government spokesman Abdul Hamid Zein told news agencies that the Governor had refused to sign the law because the stoning law is equivalent to death penalty

The law authorizing upto 400 lashes for child rape, 100 lashes for homosexual acts and 60 lashes for gambling was considered as brutal by the Human rights activist and Officials in Jakarta and they had appealed for the law to be withdrawn.

Human Rights group had strongly condemned this law since its enactment by the former legislators during the final weeks in power, saying that stoning to death clearly violates the international law to which Indonesia is signatory.
