London, Oct. 26 (ANI): Spanish striker Fernando Torres believes English Premier League club Liverpool FC is right back in the title fight after handing out a two-nil defeat to arch rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
Coach Rafa Benitez decided to play his star striker despite his lack of match fitness, and 25-year-old Torres managed to out-muscle England defender Rio Ferdinand for Liverpool's 65th-minute opener.
David Ngog's injury-time second wrapped up a victory that ended a run of four defeats - Liverpool's worst slump in 22 years.
And it moved them to within six points of leaders Chelsea, and four of United.
"We knew we needed to win to stay in the title race and we're definitely in it now. We have to be really happy with that performance but we have to make sure we keep going now," The Sun quoted Torres, as saying.
Benitez claimed: "We needed to win for our confidence so this will be a big boost for us, because we have won against a good team.
"The fans are delighted and you can see that the players are also in the same mood and this has to be very positive," he added.
The Kop boss said: "Small details against such good opposition can be the difference. They had some early chances but we were on top of them from the beginning. We were waiting for that final pass, and when it came we knew Fernando would score. The team wanted to win, to show what they could do. And with every last one of our fans behind us right to the end, we managed it." (ANI)
