Parek government announces Deepawali gift for Malay-Indians

Kuala Lumpur, Oct. 16 (ANI): The government of the Malaysian state of Perek has announced the allocation of 800 hectares of land to raise money for an Indian education fund as a Deepawali gift to Malay-Indians.

Mentri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the earnings from the land would be channelled into the Tabung Pendidikan dan Pengupayaan Pendidikan Kaum India funds.

"I hope this will come as good news for the Indians who will be celebrating Deepavali tomorrow. This is the state government's commitment to ensure that all races facing problems related to education are given aid," the Star Online quoted Kadir, as saying.

Addressing a press conference at the 2009 Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kadir said the state government had also allocated 2,000 hectare for the benefit of more than 700 Islamic religious schools and 1,000ha to aid private Chinese schools.

He added that the state government would intensify efforts to resolve the people's problems in the 2010 Budget to be tabled in the Perak state assembly on October 28. (ANI)

Most Japanese want to end Iraq war support: Poll

Tokyo, Mar 15: More than two-thirds of Japanese want to end an air force mission backing up U.S.-led military activities in Iraq this summer, when the mandate for the mission expires, a newspaper poll said today.Sixty-nine percent of those polled said they wanted the troops pulled out, while 75 per cent said the war had been a mistake, the daily Asahi Shimbun said.Japan withdrew its 600 ground troops from southern Iraq last year after a non-combat reconstruction.....
