India to look into China dam on Brahmaputra

India to look into China dam on Brahmaputra
New Delhi, Oct 16: Raising concern over the reports of China constructing a dam on Brahmaputra, India said that it would verify the matter hoping that Beijing would not take any steps that would mean detrimental to the relationship between the countries.

The ministry of external affairs (MEA) is reportedly looking into the matter to check if there was any change in the position conveyed to the ministry by the Government of China.

Earlier, Beijing had denied any plans to build any such large-scale diversion project on the Brahmaputra river.

According to few reports, India is also worried about the ecological and socio-economic ramifications of the construction to India's northeastern states.

This comes after there were reports that China had begun work on a hydroelectric project on the Yarlong Tsangpo river or Brahmaputra. The project was reportedly inaugurated in Mar 2099 and the construction began in Apr 2009.

In the project there would be a reservoir constructed which would lead to diversion of water, therefore leading to problem for Indian states dependent on the river.
