European Union lauds Dalai Lama's 'Middle way' on Tibet issue

Dharmasala, Oct 15 (ANI): Peter Clever, a European Union (EU) delegate, on Wednesday lauded Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama's middle way approach to peacefully resolve the issue of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama's "Middle Way" approach abandoned the dream of an independent Tibet in favour of seeking greater autonomy within China through dialogue.

"I think the Middle Path is the right way, - not to touch upon territorial questions. And I do it on the background of my personal German history," said Clever, during his two day visit to Dharamsala where he met the Dalai Lama.

Clever allayed concerns of Chinese authorities conveyed to him during a recent visit to China that terror activities were planned in Dharamsala.

"I was told indirectly that from here terrorist acts are organised. I am really sure there are no terrorists among those I met, just the contrary," said Clever.

Clever lauded the Chinese government for developing the infrastructure in and around Tibet. However he felt more focus should be given to education.

" We saw there high investment in infrastructure to connect Tibet to China and to the outside world. We appreciate the investment in finance by the central government. But our major question is about investment in Tibetan people especially in education," said Clever.

China sent its troops into Tibet in 1950 and the Dalai Lama fled to India a few years later to establish a government in exile. Negotiations between China and the Dalai Lama's envoys were suspended last year, provoking violence in Tibet. (ANI)
