Dell to shut plant, 905 jobs to be axed

Round Rock, Oct 9: Leading computer manufacturer, Dell Inc has announced its plans to shut down the desktop computer manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, by Jan 2010 which would lead to massive lay offs.

Reports say that the computer heavyweight will be laying off a total of 905 people, out of which 600 employees would be sacked by next month.

Dell which announced this development just two days after plant completed its fourth year in operation said that the company has taken this step to save 4 billion dollars a year by year 2011.

IBM earnings rise on services but margin narrows

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 16 (Reuters) IBM posted a 6 percent rise in quarterly profit on Oct 16 on strength in its services businesses, but profit margins narrowed and hardware sales fell on weaker demand from U.S. financial services clients.
