Oslo, Oct 9: US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize for Peace.
The Norway academy that announced its decision on Friday, Oct 9 said that the US president, who has not even finished a year in office, deserved the prestigious award for his work on Nuclear Non-Proliferation (NPT).

Announcing this, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."Beating a record 205 participants in the fray, Obama has won a gold medal, a diploma and 1.4 million dollars.
Barack Obama is not only the first African-American to hold the office of President of America, but has also been vocal on global issues such as terrorism, and global warming, apart from NPT.
