K'taka flood toll at 192; 500 AP villages submerge

Vijayawada, Oct 6: While the rain fury claimed as many as 192 lives in Karnataka, over 500 Andhra Pradesh villages located along the River Krishna are left inundated.

AP's Prakasam Barrage on Tuesday, Oct 5 received 11 lakh cusecs of water and officials say Barrage will continue to see over 11 lakh cusecs all through Wednesday, Oct 6.

With the death toll in Karnataka continually mounting, the chief minister, BS Yeddyurappa has decided to initiate padyatra across Bangalore to collect funds and relief material on Oct 7.

According to the state government data, 192 people have died, 17.8 million people have been affected by the flood and over 2 lakh houses have been either damaged or have collapsed.

Chief Minister, BSY accompanied UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi during aerial survey of the worst-hit areas of Bellary district.

BSY briefed her on the Rs 20,000 crore damage that the state has suffered due to these floods to bolster his bid for a grant of Rs 10,000 crore under the National Calamity Contingency Fund (NCCF).

LS urges govt to find a lasting solution to floods

New Delhi, Aug 24: Members of the Lok Sabha today urged the Government to initiate measures for finding a lasting solution to prevent devastation caused by annual floods. Members, both from Opposition and Treasury benches, were united in their view that crores of rupees were spent every year to meet the situation arising out of floods but not much attention had been paid to find a ''lasting solution'' to the menace.
