SC challenges Delhi HC ruling on judges' assets

Supreme Court
New Delhi, Oct 5: The Supreme Court has challenged the Delhi High Court's order that the Right To Information (RTI) act was applicable even to the office of Chief Justice of India which means that the information on judges' assets could be made public.

The Delhi HC had on Sep 2 held that the CJI is a public authority and therefore the judges' office would come under the ambit of the RTI act.

Even though the apex court was ready to put the information regarding assets of judges on its website, it went ahead and filed an appeal on Monday, Oct 5, on the larger question if the CJI's office comes within the purview of the RTI Act.

This appeal would be heard by a division bench of the High Court.
