Israel welcomes result of US-Iran talks

Washington, Oct. 4 (ANI): Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, has welcomed the recent agreement between America and Iran that the Islamic country will allow international inspectors into its secret nuclear facility and transfer much of its enriched uranium to other countries for processing it into nuclear fuel.

Although, Oren described the conclusions of Thursday's landmark meeting between Iran and the US, Russia, China, Britain, Germany and France as "important and rather positive developments," he also cautioned of Tehran's history of backtracking from agreements.

"The news appears to be good. But we have to be very, very guarded about this and keep in mind this is a regime that has systematically lied about its nuclear program for the last 25 years, it has lied recently and we assume it will continue to lie," the Jerusalem Post quoted Oren, as saying.

Earlier, Israeli officials had expressed skepticism over President Barack Obama's strategy of 'direct engagement, without preconditions, with Iran.

However, Oren said that Jerusalem backed the Obama administration's strategy.

"We have basically agreed to extend this support in return for guarantees that talks with Iranian leaders would not be open-ended, that there would be an eye on the enrichment clock, which continues to tick," he said.

Iranians have often been accused of making promises and encouraging more meetings, while waiting for political currents to change or the closed ranks among the Western allies to break. (ANI)
