Delhi gets 160 new low-floor buses

New Delhi, Oct. 4 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit flagged off 160 low-floor buses, including 30 air conditioned ones, here on Sunday.

With these, the total number of low-floor buses plying on the roads of the capital has gone up to 763.

Decorated with flowers, the buses were lined up near India Gate where Sheila Dikshit flagged them off and took a ride in one of the cherry red coloured air-conditioned buses.

"You can see these 160 buses, red coloured air conditioned buses and green coloured low floor buses. These buses have a lot of good features.

"Earlier, we used to find people hanging out of buses but now because of these buses , you won't be able to see that. We also plan to come up with 4000 to 5000 buses before Commonwealth Games," she said.

The commissioning of low-floor buses by March 2010, much before the Commonwealth Games is seen as a big achievement of the government.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games will be India's first major international sports event after the 1982 Asian Games.

New Delhi hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and again in 1982. (ANI)
