Kolkata Durga idols get buried and not immersed

Kolkata, Sep 30: At the end of the Durga Puja, the Kolkatans preferred to to bury the 2000 idols to prevent polluting the Ganga river.

Almost 99 per cent idols of Goddess Durga were given 'bhu visarjan' (buried in earth) on the banks of the river instead of 'jal visarjan' (immersed in water) on Dusshera at a place 150 kilometres away from the City of Joy.

Some intellectuals, NGOs and officials of the state administration initiated the movement.

Samajwadi Party MP, Rakesh Sachan, who supervised the 'bhu visarjan', said that deep ditches were dug out on the banks of the river with the help of machines on all eight ghats of the river.

Kolkata, Sep 25: Durga Puja in the city would soon see Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee turn a priest while Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is already busy inaugurating puja pandals across the city.In keeping with family tradition, Mukherjee would worship the Goddess at his ancestral village Miriti near Kirnahar in Birbhum district.On the other hand, for Banerjee puja is a time for socialising."I make public contact while visiting pandals," said she.CPI(M).....
