Sharad Pawar warns of severe shortage of rice

New Delhi, Sep 26: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday, Sep 24 warned of a severe shortage of rice in the days ahead.

"The shortage of rice would be caused by a dip in yield and it could further impact the rising prices," said Pawar on the sidelines of a Conference for Rabi Campaign.

"The coverage of wheat, oilseeds, pulses and some oilseeds will definitely go up. Only paddy crop will come in limited areas," Pawar said here.

He has also directed states to raise the coverage of boro paddy to compensate against the losses.

"There is a gap and the impact of drought is also there. So when there is an impact of drought, it will have some effect on the prices. We have to find out way to get out of this situation," he said.

New Delhi, May 12: Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia today said he will propose to the full Planning Commission meeting on Monday a new agricultural strategy to step up growth of the sector to the targeted level of four per cent per annum.
