Johannesburg, Sep 21: Somdev Devvarman grabbed a spot for India in the next year's World Group with five-setter victory against South Africa's Rik De Voest in the Davis Cup.
The country had almost given up the hopes of reclaiming the place after 11 years when Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna conceded the doubles rubber.
However, Somdev not only rallied back after trailing during the first two-sets of the match but also claimed a spot for India in the 16-team elite group.
In the four-hour long battle, Somdev overpowered the top-ranked South African 3-6, 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-4.
