Chennai/ Mumbai, Sep 19(ANI): As part of spreading awareness about cleanliness, International Coastal Cleanup day was organized by the Indian Coast Guard in Chennai and Mumbai on Saturday to clean the beaches of India.
Thousands of volunteers from schools, colleges, non-governmental organizations, civil administration and government organizations gathered around the main beaches to execute a mass cleanup operation.
"In Mumbai, we are observing this programme at three beaches - Dadar, Juhu and Girgam. At Juhu Chaupati, we are expecting more than 3000 students and other volunteers to clean up this coast," said Sharad Mantri, Deputy Inspector General of Coast Guard.
Several enthusiasts, who had accumulated for a cause, urged citizens to be cautious and asked citizens to throw the trash in the garbage bin, in order to keep the city clean.
"We have come here to clean up the beach. If everybody tries to keep the beach clean then this place will be garbage free. This is my humble request to everybody, that they should throw the trash in the dustbin only," said Deepak Masti, a volunteer from Mumbai.
Cleanliness operation in Chennai was carried on main beaches including Marina, Elliots, Thiruvanmiyur and the beaches in front of the Coast Guard and Navy headquarters.
"We have to come here to clean this beach. Our aim is to prevent non-biodegradable products and keep the coastline clean," said Poornani, a college student in Chennai. (ANI)
