Don't expect a miracle at Copenhagen Summit: Jairam Ramesh

New York, Sep 19 (ANI): Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said developed countries should not expect miracles at the Copenhagen Climate Summit to be held in December.

Ramesh said the goals sought for emission control by the developed countries should be more realistic.

Speaking at the Columbia University in New York, Ramesh indicated that the control limits being sought by developed countries are too high.

Ramesh also said that India should not be singled out as obstructionist and instead industrialized countries should agree on realistic targets for cutting emissions by 2020.

Ramesh's statement gains a lot of significance ahead of the summit.

He suggested the participating countries to concentrate on the building consensus on areas

He said that the December summit should focus on consensus on areas such as afforestation to promote carbon sequestration, strengthening the Clean Development Mechanism and technology sharing.

Ramesh hinted that India would soon pursue unilateral voluntary measures into legislation to fight the climate change. (ANI)
