Austerity drive remark lands Tharoor in trouble

Shashi Tharoor
New Delhi, Sep 16: The Congress announced that it may take disciplinary action against minister of state for external affairs, Shashi Tharoor for his remark that he would travel in 'cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows'.

'The party strongly disapproves the statement of the minister. It is unacceptable, not respecting political or any other sensibilities,' said Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan.

However, the party high command would decide whether to act against Tharoor.

Tharoor on his page on the micro-blogging site Twitter, was asked, 'Tell us minister, next time you travel to Kerala, will it be cattle class?'

'Absolutely, in cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows,' he replied. As a part of the Congress austerity drive, Tharoor and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna were asked to vacate their five-star hotel accommodations where they were staying at their own expenses.

At present, Tharoor resides in an Indian Navy guesthouse.

Only if you had got the facts right Nimbu pani. Travel expenses constitute about 60% of the total expenditure incurred by these ministers. I think it is appropriate of Government to take these austerity measures considering that it is "us" taxpayers money that provides for their travel.

How much will it save? HArdly much money?? Instead it would make more difference if the goverment could act against corruption. A single rais can yield as much as the austerity drive of a month of travel..
