TN frees nine convicts in Coimbatore serial blasts

Coimbatore, Sep 15: Nine persons, convicted for their involvement in 1998 blasts here, were released on Tuesday, Sep 15 following Tamil Nadu government's decision to mark the birth centenary of DMK founder C N Annadurai.

Jail authorities said the convicts were sentenced to 13 years in jail by a special court for carrying out the blasts during the visit of BJP leader L K Advani for electioneering in 1998.

The state government had ordered to release convicts, who had completed ten years of imprisonment.

Nineteen bombs went off at different places in Coimbatore, including one at Advani's meeting venue, on Feb 14, 1998.
