Teen Marriage
Dhaka, Sep 14: A man married off his 13-year-old daughter to a 75-year-old money lender in Barisal, southern Bangladesh to repay the Tk 4,000 ($ 58) loan, which he borrowed during the cyclone Aila.

The marriage between Akhinur, 13, and 75-year-old money lender Lokman Sikder took place on Friday, Sep 4.

Azhar Bepari, her father told The Daily Star that Aila had affected his six-member family, including two sons and two daughters.

He added that he was not in a position to even pay the loan interest.

Sikander demanded either immediate clearance of the loan or Akhinur's hand.

The villagers said that Sikder compelled Akhinur"s parents to marry her off to him.

The police was unable to trace Sikder.

However, Kazi Abdur Razzak, the local marriage registrar denied registering the marriage.
